JAY-Z Calls for Projects That Demand Social Justice

Although his 13th album 4:44 is due June 30, Hov’s guest column in the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter focuses on his work in television and social justice.

“The power of one voice is strong, but when it comes to social justice, the power of our collective voices is unstoppable,” he writes. “Now is the time to recognize that through our voices we really can effect change.”

Shawn Carter tried to do just that with “Time: The Kalief Browder Story,” a documentary series that shined a light on injustice in the prison system. Through works like this, he hopes to make a difference.

“We can work together to demand change from our elected government officials,” he writes. “We put them in office, we make the laws, and we show them the path to progress. That is our power, and it’s the only way that healing will come for Kalief and his family.”

Now, JAY-Z is out to do more of this with his next television project, which will also air on Spike. “My hope is for my next documentary, ‘Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,’ to create a similar conversation that leads to change and helps keep our children safe,” he writes. “And it’s an honor to have the support of Trayvon’s family in telling the story.”

But beyond this, JAY-Z is also urging viewers and fans to think about how they can make a difference. “Look around at what’s happening in your town and your city right now,” he adds. “Think small, and you can do much bigger things.”
