For years, the details of Tupac Shakur‘s steamy romance with Madonna have been shrouded in mystery, but thanks to a recently unearthed love letter the rap icon wrote the pop legend when he served time behind bars for sexual assault, we’ve gotten bit of insight into the iconic couple’s relationship—or at least the end of it.
In the love letter, which was obtained by the folks at TMZ, Shakur explains his wish to become a better friend to Madonna, before appearing to say he was breaking up with her because she’s a White woman.
“Can u understand that? For you to be seen with a Black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career. If anything it would make you seem that much more0630_tupac madonna letter-WM-2 open & exciting,” he wrote in a letter dated Jan. 15, 1995. “But for me at least in my previous perception I felt due to my ‘image’ I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was. I never meant to hurt you.”
A few sizable chunks of it have been redacted. His jail love letter is going up for auction from July 19-28 at Gotta Have Rock and Roll. The starting bid is $100,000. According to TMZ, the last ‘Pac love letter that surfaced ended up being sold for $170,000.
