Joker and Harley Quinn Movie May Actually Be Happening

In case one new Joker movie wasn’t enough for you, it looks like the villain’s recently-announced origin story will have some competition.

On Wednesday, the Hollywood Reporter said that Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the team behind the hit TV show This Is Us, were “in final negotiations” to write and direct a movie starring Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, roles they originated in the not very well-reviewed 2016 film Suicide Squad.

THR says that the Leto/Robbie flick will be released after a Suicide Squad sequel, and will be (surprise!) a “criminal love story.” Ficarra and Requa have worked with Robbie twice before, on 2015’s Will Smith-starring Focus and last year’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

The other upcoming Joker movie, which will be set in the early 1980s and will somehow involve Martin Scorsese, will not feature Leto. Instead, a different—presumably younger—actor will fill the role. That film will be directed by Todd Phillips, from the Hangover franchise, and will be co-written by Phillips and Scott Silver.

Suicide Squad, despite awful reviews, made over $700 million worldwide. In addition to the Joker/Harley Quinn film, Robbie will be portraying Quinn in the upcoming movie Gotham City Sirens, which was announced late last year.
