‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Writers Returning for Sequel

The sequel to Marvel and Sony’s summer blockbuster “Spider-Man: Homecoming” will have a lot of familiar faces both in front of and behind the camera, with the first flick’s writing team reportedly set to return for round two.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are in final negotiations to pen the screenplay for “Homecoming 2,” after the re-rebooted Spider-Man property was a hit with both fans and critics alike earlier this year. As THR points out, “Homecoming” not only put Spidey (played by Tom Holland in this most recent iteration) squarely back in the MCU, but also redeemed the character’s financial prospects after the dismal performance of the last reboot, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which failed to connect with audiences and limped away from multiplexes a shell of the property’s once-soaring early 2000s heights.

It makes sense, then, that Marvel and Sony are keen to keep the “Homecoming” gang together. In addition to McKenna and Sommers, Holland will be back, and director Jon Watts is also poised to sign on the dotted line again.

No word yet on when production on the Spidey sequel will get underway, but the flick already has a release date: It’s due in theaters on July 5, 2019.
