Jamaica has already recorded 61 murders since the start of 2018.

In the latest police statistics released 61 murders, 34 shootings and 34 robberies have been committed up to Saturday, January 13.

This is compared with 47 murders, 40 shootings and 36 robberies over the same period last year. In 2017, Jamaica recorded 1,616 murders, one of the highest homicide figures on record. St James led the statistics with 335 murders, followed by Clarendon with 168.

Meanwhile, the National Security Council is to convene a meeting on Monday with a view of operationalising strategies that were decided on at the recent Cabinet retreat to tackle the crime monster that has plagued the country for some time.

According to JIS News, Prime Minister Andrew Holness and the Cabinet “examined current crime and public order challenges and formulated strategies to urgently address them.”
