Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have welcomed their first child, a baby boy, announced Monday on the couple’s official Instagram account.
“We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz.,” the message read.
“The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives. More details will be shared in the forthcoming days,” the statement continued.
The baby’s name has not been revealed.
The first-born to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is seventh in line to the throne, behind father Harry, who is sixth. After Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles is first followed by Prince William and his three children with wife Kate Middleton: Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Buckingham Palace confirmed Monday that Meghan, 37, had gone into labor in the early hours of the morning, with Harry, 34, by her side. The couple previously announced that they would be keeping details of their baby’s birth under wraps.
Meghan and Harry announced their pregnancy back in October, five months after tying the knot at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
While Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, expressed her excitement about her daughter’s pregnancy via Kensington Palace, her estranged father Thomas Markle broke his silence with an interview.
“I was sitting in line waiting to cross the border when I heard the baby announcement on the car radio,” the former Hollywood lighting director recalled. “I thought, ‘My baby is having a baby.’”
But come the holidays, Thomas alleged Meghan and Harry had “frozen” him out.
“I have made dozens of attempts to reach my daughter via text and letters, but she and Harry have put up a wall of silence,” Thomas, 74, said in an interview with The Mail on Sunday.
Despite Meghan’s family drama, she and Harry remain hopeful their child will lead a “relatively normal life.”
Meghan and Harry moved from Kensington Palace to Frogmore Cottage, located on the grounds of Windsor, earlier this spring.
