Cuba’s National Assembly will elect a new president today and announce the replacement for Raul Castro tomorrow, an unusual two-day process that will install someone from outside the Castro family in the country’s highest government office for the first time in nearly six decades.

Cuba on Monday began a five-month political transition expected to end with Raul Castro’s departure from the presidency, capping his family’s near-total dominance of the country’s political system for nearly 60 years.
